The Adult Education Class offers a weekly opportunity for adults to deepen their faith and increase their understanding of God's word. The adult class meets in the Parish Hall from 9-9:45 on Sunday mornings.
Topics are lectionary based and focus on individual books of the Bible, Christian History, resources on spiritual growth and other themes of current theological interest related to the weekly lectionary. The class is led by our rector and other parishioners under the rector's guidance. The Adult Sunday School has been using the African Bible Study method to stimulate discussion based on using the Sunday lectionary readings. The African Bible Study method was introduced by the African Delegation to the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Church.
In this method, we usually start with the collect of the day, which is first read silently by everyone, and then aloud in unison. Then we take turns reading the portions of scripture selected to be read at church on that particular Sunday.
Then the following method of study is used:
1.One person reads the passage slowly.
2.Each person identifies the word or phrase that catches their attention.
3.Each shares the word or phrase with the group.
4.Another person reads the passage slowly (from a different translation if possible ).
5.Each person identifies where this passage touches their life today.
6.The passage is read a third time (another reader and translation if possible).
7.Each person names or writes, "From what I've heard and shared, what do I believe God wants me to do or be? Is God inviting me to change in any way?"
8.Each person shares their answer.
9.Each person prays for the person on their right, naming what was shared in the other steps.
10.Close with the Lord's Prayer.
