Reflections from the Rector: Preparation and Instructions for Holy Week

Holy Week begins with the Sunday of the Passion, or Palm Sunday.  This year we will celebrate Palm Sunday on March 28th.  The service will begin in the parish hall for The Liturgy of the Palms and then we will process with our palms into the church. This feast celebrates the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.  The people who greeted him expected a powerful hero.  They did not understand the kind of suffering he had to endure in order to bring us salvation.  Therefore, the joyous triumphal entry into Jerusalem ends a few days later with the somberness of Christ’s suffering and death on a cross.  The theme of Holy Week is one of Passion, the ultimate in love and sacrifice.  John’s gospel gives us Jesus’ definition of Passion: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (I John 15:13).  Our Liturgy of the Palms begins with a prayer in which we ask for God’s help “that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts, whereby you have given us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord” (BCP p. 270).  The branches of palms that we use in procession are signs of his ultimate victory over sin and death.  And for this reason, we pray that our Lord will “grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life” (BCP p. 271).

The service for Maundy Thursday on April 1st at 7:00 PM will take place again this year at St. Andrew’s Ada, a very nice mission church that is part of Piedmont Parish, where Emmanuel celebrated Maundy Thursday last year. (9816 Crest Hill Road, Marshall, VA  20115).  This service recalls the Last Supper when Jesus gave us a new commandment (the word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for mandate, or commandment): “Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13: 34-35).  The second command our Lord gave to his disciples on this night before he died took place in the context of Christ washing the disciple’s feet.  Afterwards he said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you (John 13:15).  Consequently, a service of foot-washing is included as a part of this evening’s service.

Each year on Good Friday thousands of pilgrims fill the narrow, winding streets over which Jesus Christ walked on the way to his crucifixion on Golgotha.  By the Middle Ages the Franciscans began to establish this devotion in European churches known as “The Way of Sorrows” or “Stations of the Cross”.  In churches and on building in the village streets, commemorative markers were placed to symbolize the events which occurred as Christ walked to his execution.  In this same tradition, we at Emmanuel will observe this solemn ritual with a service commemorating the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. and a Good Friday service with a reading of the passion and a sermon at 12:00 noon.

On Easter Sunday we will celebrate with two major services, one at 9:00 AM for children and youth.  An Easter egg hunt for the children at 10:00 and a traditional service at 11:00 AM.

After the forty days of lent often symbolized by hard times, the times of trial, the times of self-denial, the time of mourning, it can be oh so very hard to believe in what Jesus has said about being raised on the third day, so very hard to believe that not only was he raised - but that we too will be raised, that death does not in fact have the last word. As surprising as it is, it is true, and consequently this is not only a great and joyous celebration but also the cornerstone of the Christian faith.

Faithfully,

Stephen

“Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,

Wheat that in dark earth many days has lain;

Love lives again, that with the dead has been;

Love is come again like wheat arising green.

When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,

Your touch can call us back to life again,

Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been;

Love is come again like wheat arising green”

                                                                                          Hymn 204

            I am feeling the urge to dig in the garden.  I love the smell of earth and grass and mulch. I search the garden beds with anticipation, wondering which of my perennials will actually return.

I seek the tiny green leaves, knowing that just below the surface, much is going on.  As I write this, the landscape is still mostly brown, with just bare hints of green.  But very soon all the meadows will be green and the trees will be full of blossoms and nature will have come to life again.

            As I gather and dust off my gardening tools and begin to clear the earth and start to dig and weed and as I prepare to plant my seeds and seedlings, I keep hearing this hymn.  It is one of my favorite Easter hymns.  The words of the hymn were written by John Macleod Campbell Crum and set to the French melody Noel Nouvelet. Originally a Christmas carol, Crum transformed it into an Easter carol and it was published in London in the Oxford Book of Carols in 1928.  The imagery in the text is taken from John 12:24 “Very truly, I tell you unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” and I Corinthians 15:37 “And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain”.

            In his book, The Church’s Year of Grace, the Benedictine Pius Parsch takes us to a deeper level of meaning:  “We must not remain on the plane of nature; for us nature is a holy symbol…which tells of another world which now at Easter is likewise celebrating resurrection.  Spring with its transformation of hill and meadow is, accordingly, a great symbol of an event in sacred history and of an event now taking place within the church.  Springtime is nature executing her Easter liturgy.  Neither poetry nor art can even approximate her grand display.  In every corner of her vast cathedral a thousand voices are shouting Alleluia, the voices of creatures that have come to life.”

            As in the words of the hymn, nature reminds us that the wintry griefs of a human life will finally be healed in the sun of springtime, and that death is a passage to new life.  By considering the wonders of nature, we can glimpse eternal truths.  A simple act of planting a seed, or bringing water and mulch to the garden, has meaning and promise far beyond the commonplace. So dig on!  Perhaps this is why there is so much joy in gardening.  It is so full of promise! Life and love will come again like “wheat arising green”.

The whole bright world rejoices now: Hilariter! Hilariter!

The birds do sing on every bough:  Alleluia! Alleluia!

Then shout beneath the racing skies: Hilariter! Hilariter!

To him who rose that we might rise: Alleluia!  Alleluia!
