What began as a small village festival on the banks of Goose Creek in the village of Delaplane has grown into one of the premier outdoor family events in Virginia. The Delaplane Strawberry Festival, now held up the road at Sky Meadows State Park, is visited by close to 10,000 people over the Memorial Day weekend each year. The event offers two days of family fun in an idyllic setting overlooking the Historic Crooked Run Valley District.
Hosted by members of Emmanuel Church, local partnering organizations and many kind and diligent volunteers, the festival raises money for the ministries of Emmanuel and our outreach partners. Each year, we are blessed to be able to contribute to many organizations within our community, nationally and internationally who are working to improve the lives of so many in need.
Stephen, Heidi, Chairs and the many volunteers~
Thank you for making the 2011 Delaplane Strawberry Festival such a huge success! It was a ton of fun and I could feel my heart "falling in love withFestival" this past weekend. You know the history, you know the hard work involved....but do we know the impact? The many visitors I spoke to coming in from afar and from around the corner spoke of their family traditions and "Festival favorites". Parents have brought their children every year and reflect back ~ remembering their child's first "stroller Festival" or first "walking Festival"...to now ....their first post-graduation Festival. Vendors have the collection of stories as well. Including one hard-working owner of the BBQ pit. As "first food vendor" to participate ~ He tells his side of the Festival perspective (the variety of weather, equipmentcrowds) ..... All in all, it has a special place on the calendar for so many.
We also truly enjoyed working with Tim Skinner and his SMSP staff ~ especially Chief Ranger ErinPark Officer Joe. Their hospitality and desire to make this a smooth Festival were key elements to making this year a success.
A special thank-you to an important couple ~ Emily Weaton Porter and Jay Steere ~ the engine behind the Groupon marketing. This newlywed couple has poured months into research, negotiations, strategizing and finally implementation. This new idea to "broaden the Festival community" brought in folksthe other end of 66.....I thank you Emily & Jay for proposing the idea, figuring out the idea and closing the books on the idea.
To many more strawberries ahead....
Sincerely, Jeff & Laura
