Some folks say that there are "givers" and "takers." So, how does this relate to stewardship? There is some "giver" and some "taker" in all of us.
I think most of us "take" the church for granted. Most of us believe that when we want to be married, buried, baptized, visited, inspired, transpired, confirmed or affirmed that the Church will be there.
God Willing and the People Consenting it will be.
It is the People Consenting part that is stewardship.
It is not just passive consent that counts. It is active consent-being a giver. Are you are Giver or a Taker? There are approximately 70 families or households that attend Emmanuel and write a check and put it in the plate at least once a year. Almost everyone of them has an expectation that they will be taken care of in some way when they need it-buried, married et cetera. But what does is cost to make that expectation a reality? The answer is $225,000 per year. Clergy, building maintenance, electricity, sheet music for the choir, gifts to our outreach beneficiaries, mission trips, Christian education for us and our children, coffee for coffee hours, bulletins and so forth. The spiritual, the mundane and lots of things in between.
That comes out to $3,214 per year for each of those 70 recipients or takers. Previous givers through our endowments, rent from the church in Marshall and the Strawberry Festival reduce the pledge amount we need from each giver family to about $1,857 per year. Some givers are able to give a lot more and they do; six families provide about one half of the pledge goal. Some of us aren't as able financially and give in other ways and to the extent of their ability. Honor your giving side and the giving that Christ gave for us. Be a giver.
Pledge.
