SPIRITUAL FORMATION
Sunday School

Sunday School provides religious education, supports a foundation on which all children can build their lives, influences positive choices of behavior, and models Christian love for children at the Pre-K level through the 12th grade.

Sunday school at Emmanuel meets during the academic year from       9:00-9:45 am in the Parish House. The class curriculum, "Living the Good News",  is a lectionary based program of the Episcopal Church that offers different activities for different age groups.

Each week our children and youth explore the Holy Scripture and learn by doing, using their creativity to express what they have heard and to apply what has been discovered to their everyday lives.

Sunday School for all ages begins on September 13, 2009 at 9am.

Pre K-Kindergarten will be led by Ginger Harris
My children Daniel and Annie will be teaching the Pre K /K class, with me.  Our plan is to teach the best-known and beloved stories from the Bible to introduce and reinforce the message that God and Jesus are here taking care of us.  Each class will consist of story time, then games, crafts, and activities that relate to the lesson and the children’s  world.

The 1st & 2nd Grade class will be led by Mert Cook
"Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of GOD belongs."    Mark 10:14
In our class this year children will explore stories and people from the Bible in an exciting and creative way.  The kids will experience learning the Bible from not only hearing stories, but also seeing and feeling the stories.  We will invite all the senses to experience a journey of creative learning and the children will then be asked to wonder, play and express what they have learned through art, writing, music or acting.
The children will also have the opportunity to work on several "mission" projects throughout the year.  They will gain confidence and joy in helping others and realize how important they are in our parish as well as our world.  The children will also learn that they can make a difference no matter their size.  I look forward to seeing all the kids grow this year along with me!  Thanks, Mert

The 3rd-5th Grade class will be led by Jennifer Armstrong
I plan to create lessons that follow the lectionary, so that what the kids are hearing in Sunday school will be revisited in church.  The class will meet in the Sunday school room that has the cubbies.  Crafts, games, movement activities, role playing, and other activities will engage the children.

The 6th-8th Grade class will be led by Ross Armstrong and Julie McCarty
We are using the Living the Good News curriculum, which follows the lectionary.  Our topics this fall will be:  Faith in Action, Childlike Humility, The Gifts of God's People, God's Plan for Companionship, God of Impossibilities, The Call to Discipleship, A Celebration of Saints, The Joy of Generosity, The Coming of Christ Paradoxical King
Activities will include group discussions, individual reflection and writing, simulations, mini-projects, art, etc...

The Adult Class will be led by Father Stephen Becker
The Adult Sunday School has been using the African Bible Study method to stimulate discussion  based on using the Sunday lectionary readings.  The African Bible Study method was introduced by the African Delegation to the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Church.
In this method, we usually start with the collect of the day, which is first read silently by everyone, and then aloud in unison.  Then we take turns reading the portions of scripture  selected to be read at church on that particular Sunday.
Then the following method of study is used:
1.One person reads the passage slowly.
2.Each person identifies the word or phrase that catches their attention.
3.Each shares the word or phrase with the group.
4.Another person reads the passage slowly (from a different translation if possible ).
5.Each person identifies where this passage touches their life today.
6.The passage is read a third time (another reader and translation if possible).
7.Each person names or writes, "From what I've heard and shared, what do I believe God wants me to do or be? Is God inviting me to change in any way?"
8.Each person shares their answer.
9.Each person prays for the person on their right, naming what was shared in the other steps.
10.Close with the Lord's Prayer.
